Middle School Lesson Plans
Mindful Breaths, Social Skills, & Teamwork: Group Lesson Plans
This group was created to help build 6th grade students' knowledge of social skills and how to incorporate them into their daily activities. This is accomplished through the use of media, interactive activities, and thoughtful discussions.
The goals of this group, include:
1. Students will learn a coping skill that they can rely on always (mindfully counting breaths)
2. Students will learn how to interact with peers and adults successfully
3. Students will learn that people can feel differently in the same situation
4. Students will demonstrate team work and social skills via group activities, challenges, and discussions
ASCA, VA school counseling standards, and VA 6th grade SOLS are listed on the lesson plans

Be a Rainbow
This lesson uses Maya Angelou as a starting point for exploring how students can be a rainbow in the lives of others, while also identifying who has been a rainbow in their own life. The lesson crosswalks national counseling standards, VA counseling standards, and VA middle school English SOLs.

A Presentation on Bullying Grades 6-8
This presentation focused on teaching middle school students the definition of bullying, how to identify bullying, ideas on how to report bullying, and suggestions on how to change their behaviors if they are a target, bystander, or bully. Videos, music, participation from the class, and real-life stories from the media and counselors weer used in this presentation to make it interactive, engaging, and informative.
This lesson meets the following VSCA standards:
MP1. Recognize the effect of peer pressure on decision making,
MP2. Understand the consequences of decisions and choices,
MP5. Demonstrate appropriate skills for interactions with adults and
developing and maintaining positive peer relationships,
MP6. Use appropriate communication and conflict resolution skills with peers and adults

Our middle school outreach program focused on informing parents what Academic & Career Plans (ACPs) are, what Virginia Wizard is and how we use it to complete students' ACPs, and how this ties to high school and their child's future.
