Technology & School Counseling
James Madison University Graduate Psychology Symposium April 18, 2014
This presentation focuses on three areas of technology that could benefit school counselors: technology to use with students, technology in the office, and how to use technology to build a personal learning network (PLN) using social media. This presentation incorporates ways to engage students in the classroom using media clips, how to collect data quickly and easily, and ideas to create a college going culture within your school too.

Self-Efficacy, Green Exercise, & 5th Grade Girls
James Madison University Graduate Psychology Symposium April 18, 2014
An 8-week small group action plan is the focus of this presentation. The group divides its time between a psycho-educational component and green exercise. Research supporting the use and importance of green exercise is also explored, as well as ways to increase a student's level of self-efficacy. The psycho-educational aspect of each week's lesson was created with research from the National Association of School Psychologists website and Fishful Thinking partnership.

Planning for Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention:
A Virginia Counselors Association Conference Presentation November 9, 2013
At the Virginia Counselors Association annual conference I, along with other colleagues, presented information about planning for suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention (primarily in the schools) during a 3-hour Saturday session. Videos, activities, and demonstrations were incorporated to help other counselors and school personnel learn current and best evidence-based practices in suicide prevention and intervention. We also discussed the best ways to help students and the community cope after a suicide, while limiting the chance of contagion.

Prevention, Response, and Postvention Plan: Suicide, Self-Injury & Violence May 2013
Part of the requirements for PSYC 685: Psychopathology: Diagnosis and Intervention Planning was to create a Prevention, Response, and Postvention plan for suicide, self-injury, and violence in the school. The final project is organized in a notebook; however, a lot of the information is included in the document below. I included information to assist counselors, teachers, parents and students with these serious topics.

Children with Autism & Theraplay June 2013
I presented information on Theraplay and how to use this play therapy approach with children diagnosed with Autism. Theraplay is a great option since it can and should be adapted to meet the needs of each child. It is especially good for children with Autism since one of the core dimensions of Theraplay is engagement, which is something many children with Autism struggle within their day to day lives.
I also created a packet of resources that are helpful for counselors, parents, and children with Autism who are interested in using Theraplay or Theraplay techniques.
It should be noted that to be an official Theraplay therapist training is needed. You can learn more on the Theraplay website.

Virginia Department of Education Project November 2012
After reviewing information from both VDOE's website and WCMS's website, a school profile was created. Then three evidence based intervention plans were created to address the needs of this school. These plans are also based on the ASCA National Model.

Working with Others & Dating in the Workplace November 2012
Friendship Industries develops and maintains employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities in an integrated work environment. As part of the Career Development course at James Madison University, I co-presented information on working with others and dating in the workplace. Discussion with the clients at Friendship included the importance of focusing on work, how to handle disagreements, appropriate touch, and what is appropriate behavior at work when dating a co-worker.
